Using Zen Cart to make money online
Taking the first practical steps towards making money online with an e-commerce business really is not that technical. The next few pages will prove it. These brief steps installing the Zen Cart shopping cart, will leave you with a working platform for selling your product range online. This section is possibly one of the most satisfying. In under an hour you will have a web shop! OK it won't be open for business right away but it is still significant progress.
Check-list so far: I am assuming a few things at this point:
- You have already chosen your business model and product niche?
- You have decided Zen Cart is the most appropriate shopping cart for YOU and not just landed on this page by accident?
- You have web hosting; either self-hosting or professional hosting
If you're ready then lets get on with installing Zen Cart.
The first steps installing Zen Cart
The first thing you need to do is to put the files that make up your stores software onto your 1and1 server. To do this open up 2 Explorer windows as before when talking about getting your website online. In one of the explorer windows log onto your 1&1 web space using FTP as described previously.
In the other window open the Zen Cart folder. You can download the files for free from http://www.zen-cart.com or from the Business Dreams, shopping carts resource section.
Single click on the top file within the zen-cart folder. Now hold down the shift key and then use the down arrow cursor key to highlight all of the contents of the zen-cart folder. Now single click and hold over those highlighted contents. Now still holding the left mouse button drag all those files and folders across to your web server and let go of the mouse button. Wait while the contents are copied from the disc to the web server, it might take a little while depending on the speed of your connection.
What might go wrong?
If during the process you get an error don't panic. What can sometimes happen is the connection to the 1&1 server will 'time out'. This is quite common and nothing to worry about.
If this happens highlight and drag a few folders at a time. Also if you end up doing it this way be sure to start from the beginning and drag everything across, a few at a time, because the contents of a folder might have been partially copied. You will probably get a message saying that 'the file/files already exists, do you want to overwrite' just select yes to all.
Now we need to modify some Zen Cart files.
