Mastering Joomla 1.5 Extension & Framework Development by Chuck Lanham & James Kennard

My review of 'Mastering Joomla 1.5 Extension & Framework Development' is done. Want to make the next killer-app for Joomla. Could this be the book for you, or not?

Mastering Joomla 1.5 Extension & Framework Development

Chapter 1 sets of in the right direction with a great introduction which not only left me wanting more more but gave me a sense of possibility. By the end of it I was itching to find out mor and expectant that I would singlehandely write the next Community Builder. Well almost.

Chapter 2 and for a few chapters goes all confusing and abstract yet high level detailing with flowcharts and the like the different processes that control Joomla. This is apparently essential to develop extensions etc. However for me I felt a bit disconnected and I must confess I didn't really get it or understand why it was important for me to remember or understand the various charts, diagrams and folder structures.

However I did learn at least one lifesaver that caused me to modify my code on a site under development the code below was missing.

Review of Drupal e-commerce with Ubercart 2.x

by George Papadongonas & Yiannis Doxaras

Drupal e-commerce with Ubercart 2.x cover

Buy from Packt Publishing

Drupal is an open source (free) content management system. To you and me, it's a pre-built website that makes it easy to add and manage articles and more advanced content as well. Ubercart is an add on (module) for Drupal that allows the Drupal website owner to relatively easily turn his website into an e-commerce store.

There is no denying Drupals credentials as a quality product but is it just for programmers or can a beginner to e-commerce use it and more specifically can this book deliver what it says on the cover, "create an e-commerce website... and have advanced e-shopping capabilities...". Read on to find out.

Review of JAM affiliate tracking system

Jam box shotBefore we get into JAM in great detail, lets first talk about why you might want to consider a product of this type at all? Obviously the best type of web site traffic is free traffic. That is the articles, reviews and product descriptions on your web sites cause the search engines to send loads of ready to buy customers to you. If you have not prepared your store for selling effectively to customers or you have not yet fully implemented an ongoing SEO program then you should probably do that first.

Preparing to install Zen Cart

Taking the first practical steps towards making money online with an e-commerce business really is not that technical. The next few pages will prove it. These brief steps installing the Zen Cart shopping cart, will leave you with a working platform for selling your product range online. This section is possibly one of the most satisfying. In under an hour you will have a web shop! OK it won't be open for business right away but it is still significant progress.

Check-list so far: I am assuming a few things at this point:

  • You have already chosen your business model and product niche?
  • You have decided Zen Cart is the most appropriate shopping cart for YOU and not just landed on this page by accident?
  • You have web hosting; either self-hosting or professional hosting

Learning jQuery 1.3 by Johnathan Chaffer & Karl Swedberg

Coming soon is my review to Learning jQuery 1.3. Like most of my reviews it will be approached from the point of view of a newcomer to the technology.

Cover of Learning jQuery 1.3

jQuery is a Java Script library which helps web developers add exciting, useful and dynamic content to there web pages. This is unarguable. But does "Learning jQuery 1.3" really help you get started?

Twelve years ago when I was making arcade games with Java (as opposed to Java Script). I used to think that Java Script was a sort of toy language, used only by people who wanted to make annoying pop-ups for web sites or silly animations. Fortunately for the web development community and billions of surfers the likes of John Resig (jQuery creator) had allot more vision than me.

So, re-visiting what I chose to ignore all those years ago I was quite excited to finally get in on the now well established jQuery scene. But I was well prepared for what I expect to be a fairly technical and steep learning curve.

How to find a product and a niche

Here are some ideas to try and find a product or range that inspires you. Of course it is great if you can sell stuff you are really interested in but don't let that interest get in the way of making the right product choices. It is much better to become a millionaire selling pooper scoopers than it is to be a broke idealist.
